Velvet & Microfiber Sofa Cleaning Guide

Velvet and microfiber sofas look luxurious but are easy to damage with the wrong cleaning. Too much moisture crushes velvet pile and leaves water rings on microfiber. Here’s how to care for them properly.

Velvet care

Vacuum gently with a soft brush in the direction of the pile
Use minimal moisture — over-wetting flattens the pile permanently
Blot spills immediately; never rub velvet
Brush the pile back up while slightly damp

Microfiber care

Check the cleaning code (W, S, S-W, X) before using any liquid
“S” means solvent-only — water can leave rings
Work in small sections and dry-brush to restore texture

When to go professional

Because velvet and microfiber are unforgiving, professional low-moisture cleaning is the safest option for a deep refresh — we use fabric-specific methods that protect texture and colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can velvet sofas be steam cleaned?
Velvet needs careful, low-moisture handling. We use gentle techniques that refresh velvet without crushing or marking the pile rather than heavy steam.
Why does my microfiber sofa get water rings?
Some microfiber is solvent-only (“S” code). Water leaves rings on these fabrics, so they need a dry/solvent method — which a professional can identify and use safely.
